DNA gyrase, a well-validated drug target, is involved in bacterial DNA replication, repair and decatenation. Currently, the fluoroquinolone class of antibacterials act via inhibition of the DNA gyrase enzyme. However, their efficacy is hindered by the increasing incidence of antimicrobial resistance.
