An efficient and environmentally benign synthetic protocol has been developed for the synthesis of benzo[c]pyrazolo[2,7]naphthyridine derivatives through regioselective multi-component on-water reaction of isatin, malononitrile and 3-aminopyrazole. The structures of the synthesized derivatives were established through FTIR, H-1-NMR, C-13-NMR spectroscopy and ESI-mass spectrometry.

A series of substituted and fused heterocyclic derivatives 2-17 were synthesized using 3,5-bis(4-methoxybenzylidene)-1-propylpiperidin-4-one (1) as starting material. Some of the synthesized compounds were examined in vitro for their antitumor activity against HepG-2, PC-3, and HCT-116 human carcinoma cell lines using MTT assay.
