Substituted 2-(5-R-2-furylmethylene)-3-oxobutanenitriles I (R = H, halo, Ph, etc.) were obtained by condensation of the corresponding 5-R-2-furaldehydes II with 3-amino-2-butenenitrile in acid medium.
