A Polypyridyl-Based Layered Complex as Dual-Functional Co-catalyst for Photo-Driven Organic Dyes Degradation and Water Splitting

With the ever-increasing concerns on environmental pollution and energy crisis, it is of great urgency to develop high-performance photocatalyst to eliminate organic pollutants from wastewater and produce hydrogen via water splitting. Herein, a polypyridyl-based mixed covalent Cu-I/II complex with triangular {Cu-3} and rhombic {Cu2Cl4} subunits alternately extended by mixed SCN- and Cl- heterobridges [Cu-4(DNP)(SCN)Cl-4](n) (1) [DNP = 2,6-bis(1,8-naphthyridine-2-yl)pyridine] was solvothermally synthesized and employed as a dual-functional co-photocatalyst. Resulting from a narrowed band-gap of 1.07 eV with suitable redox potential and unsaturated Cu-I/II sites, the complex together with H2O2 can effectively degrade Rhodamine B and methyl orange up to 87.4 and 88.2%, respectively. Meanwhile, the complex mixed with H2PtCl6 can also accelerate the photocatalytic water splitting in the absence of a photosensitizer with the hydrogen production rate of 27.5 mu mol.g(-1).h(-1). These interesting findings may provide informative hints for the design of the multiple responsive photocatalysts.

Synthesis, characterization, DNA cleavage, docking and cytotoxic studies of novel nalidixic acid hydrazone and its Cu-II, Ni-II and Co-II complexes

Novel N’-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-1-ethyl-1,4-dihydro-7-methyl-4-oxo-1,8-naphthyridine-3-carbohydrazide [NBNCH] and its solid metal complexes with Cu-II, Ni-II and Co-II were synthesized and characterized by employing spectro-analytical techniques viz. elemental analyses, magnetic susceptibilities measurements, H-1 NMR, UV-Vis, IR, Mass, TGA, SEM-EDX, ESR and spectrophotometry studies. The HyperChem 7.5 software was used for quantum mechanical calculations. The geometry optimization, contour maps of highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) and corresponding binding energy values of molecular and ionic forms of title compound were computed using semi empirical single point PM3 method, in order to understand the binding modes of metal complexes. The stoichiometric studies of complexes determined spectrophotometrically using Job’s continuous variation and mole ratio methods inferred 1:2 ratio in respective systems. The title compound and its metal complexes screened for antibacterial and antifungal properties indicated more pronounced activity of Cu-II complex compared to other compounds. The studies of nuclease activity for the cleavage of PBR322 DNA and MTT assay for in vitro cytotoxic properties showed high activity of Cu-II complex. The interaction studies of metal complexes with CT-DNA investigated by UV-Visible and fluorescence titrations revealed the intercalation mode of binding. Docking studies were also performed to illustrate the binding mode of the title compound with the target site of Thymidine phosphorylase from E. coli (PDB ID: 4EAF) protein.

Multi-Step Synthesis of Biologically Active Novel N-Benzyl-3,5-Bis(Arylidene)-Piperidin-4-Ones and Some Derived Bicyclic and Tricyclic Ring Systems as Macromolecules

This study reports the synthesis of some new bicyclic and tricyclic heterocyclic macromolecules incorporated pyrano[3,2-c]pyridine, 1,6-naphthyridine, and pyrimidonaphthyridine rings starting from new dienones, N-benzyl-3,5-bis(arylidene)-piperidin-4-ones. The chemistry involved the cyclocondensation of dienones with malononitrile in the presence of piperidine yielded the target 2-aminopyranopyridine-3-carbonitriles. The reaction of dienones with malononitrile or ethyl cyanoacetate in the presence of excess ammonium acetate afforded the corresponding 2-aminonaphthyridines and/or 2-oxonaphthyridine derivatives, respectively, in good yields. The 2,4-disubstituted pyrimido[4,5-b][1,6]naphthyridines were successfully achieved from the reaction of the 2-aminonaphthyridine derivatives with the appropriate reagents. The structures of the isolated products were determined by elemental analysis and spectral methods (FT-IR, H-1-NMR, and C-13-NMR).
